21 Sep 2024: The Forums have been updated to phpBB 3.3.13. I hope this rectifies the unusual activity detected several days ago. |
18 Sep 2024: There has been some unusual high volume traffic to the Forums causing it to crash. I don't think the volume is actual real crabbers. As a result, I have temporarily disabled the Forums so that I can investigate this issue further. |

Moss |
What is moss used for? Moss is a great alternative to sponges for increasing humidity levels in your tank. |
What species of moss are safe for hermit crabs? You can use either hiawatha moss or sphagnum moss (not to be confused with the unsafe sphagnum peat moss). It is unknown whether the former is available in Australia, but it can be purchased in the USA from Michaels. The latter can be purchased in Australia from the Easy Orchids store. If you choose to buy hiawatha or sphagnum moss elsewhere, make sure that the moss is free of pesticides and green dyes. |
Can I use moss manufactured by Zoo Med or Fluker's? No. Such moss products are either an unsafe species or they contain green dyes. |
Should I wet the moss with fresh or salt water? You should wet the moss for the first time with salt water and then keep it moist over time with fresh water or diluted salt water. The moss should be moist, not dripping wet with water. |
How do I build a moss pit and where should it be placed? Find a simple plastic or glass container and fill it with the moss. You can either embed the container into the bedding or hang it above ground with suction cups. |
