Taketomi Island

Taketomi Island is a popular day trip destination for visitors from Ishigaki Island, which is only a 15 minute ferry ride away. Taketomi Island is famous for its buildings with traditional Ryukyuan red rooves and huge butterflies.

I walked through three connecting beaches along the west coast. I guess ruggies are very common in Okinawa. As you can see from the photos, their body colour can vary greatly between individuals.

At the time of this trip, I was still learning how to distinguish between the different species of land hermit crabs. Fortunately, I took many close up photos of crabs that looked interesting or suspicious. It turns out that this guy below is the one and only cav (Coenobita cavipes) I saw during my trip! Notice how he doesn't have any ridge (////) marks on his big claw like the rugs?
