12 February 2025: Due to family commitments and work, I have been unable to update this website and realise it is long overdue for an update. I will start updating the different pages as an overhaul after a long decade hiatus, especially considering how its focus and niche on the Internet will change.

Miyako Island

29 April 2016

Of my Okinawa trip, the Miyako Islands were my favourite. Originally I planned to go to Ishigaki and Okinawa Main Island only. I'm glad I stayed a few days in this lesser known gem of Okinawa Prefecture. Miyako Island is also said to have the best beaches of Japan. I arrived in Miyako Island in the afternoon and did not have a rental car until the next day. To keep myself occupied, I rented a bike from my hotel and rode to Sunayama Beach.

I explored the eastern and southern coasts of Miyako Island. From a ferry port east of the German Village in the southern coast, I rode a boat with a glass bottom, where you can see the coral reef and marine wildlife without getting wet.

After a brief evening visit to Maehama Beach, which is said to be the best beach in the whole of Japan, I drove along the bridge to Kurima Island in the south-west. It is these quieter islands where more hermit crabs are found.
