Varied and Base diet.

Post by Hermes' Hermies »

I'm a soon-to-be 'new' hermit crab owner and was wondering what their base diet should be...-.- I was thinking I would give them fruits as their base ( pesticide free, I heard the story!) varying fruits each day, I even made a list! ^_^. It is apples, bananas, pineapple or orange, walnut, saltanas, red bell pepper(i'll grow it myself^_^) and finally, at the end of the week, mango or grape or potato! I know it's lacking one thing: protein and calcium. Any suggestions on what to use, or if my approach is totally wrong...Thanks!

I also understand that they are I face omnivorous, and require meat too. I was thinking of pinching a little bit of meat off my mum before she marinates it and cooks it, and give it to my hermit crabs. What meats are recommended as well?

Hi Hermes :)
I am new this site, but not new to crabbing :), and I can say that yes! it is important that you give your crabbies a source of protein! They will eat most anything fish, chicken, and steak, ground meat... raw or cooked, that is your own preferance. You actually give them animal protein as well as plant protein. Otherwise they might feel inclined to commit cannablism. If you lack actual animal protien, plant protiens will suffice for a short time- soy beans and corn are always a hit in my tanks! And as you already mentioned any meat with out a marinate or seasoning on is best. They will totally shun the seasoning! :)

Oh, OK! I see what you mean... Uhmm, when you say steak, do you mean beef? Beef is banned from our household... But can they have lamb or goat as well? And if you're saying I should also give them other sources of protein, could I give them brine shrimp?

PS where can I get dried plankton from?

They are carion feeders, which means that they eat anything. Much like a crow :) If it washes up on a beach, they will eat it. If it is in a tide pool ( or even mud puddle in some parts of the world) it is free game for a land hermit crab (and many other species) In our homes, we are a little more .... reserved... on what we will put in their habitats. I know a few captive crabs that LOVE french fries! :) I only recommend this a special ONCE in a while treat.
I find that my darlings LOVE chicken. any part of the chicken (hearts, gizzards, livers, leg, breast, wing, and the bone!) I think goat and lamb would be good for them too. Shrimp- store bought meaning, at your local grocery, is good as they will eat the exo the shrimp has, and that is very beneficial for your crabs) Brine shrimp, red river shrimp- I have been able to find in a local petstore- Petco for me here- but there are several places online that you can actually purchase too. I try to give them red river shrimp and meal worms at least once a week- all of which I picked up at the pet store :)

I think it might be ok, but i wouldn't risk it, lightly cook it would be the best option. Shrimp is full of goodies, so it should be fine :D
I have 9 so far, hoping of getting more soon :P
246L/65G - 'Tidal Jungle' (Crabs) | 246L/65g - 'Backwater Pool' (Fish/Snails) | 96L/25G - ''Twisted Minds" (Fish/Snails/Shrimp) | 300L/90G Fancy Pond (Goldfish)

I've never had any problems with 'Impulse Buying'. They're just animals that I forgot I had planned to get.
