Bugs?

Post by arhoads »

I was working in my garden and after seeing all the bugs fleeing I was wondering what they can eat. I know crickets are okay but what about; earthworms, pill bugs, millipedes, slugs and grubs? If they are okay do I have to dry them out first?

This is one of those "Ewwwww" questions.
Sort of all of the above, but I would suggest to let them dry first and make sure they had not come in contact with any forms of pesticides/insecticides or other chemicals. (including plant food of any kind)
Hermies are scavengers, and as a rule will not kill for food.

Edited to add:
And be careful because these insects also are known to have parasitic type mites themselves, wouldn't want these in the tank. Maybe a quick dip in boiling water prior to drying would help?

I have had some pill bugs in my tank as the clean up crew, i have read it on HCA and Raptor ate all 20, greedy crab! gotta get some more...
Earth worms are not the best idea as you don't know what they have eaten, so earthworms, no-no...
Slugs not to sure, but people have been feeding there crabs can-o-snails or something like that and there crabs have enjoyed it, also on HCA.
millies should be ok
about the other bugs, depends :D hope this helped :D

I put some pill bugs in the tank. A few have disappeared, I'm assuming Kong ate them, and the rest hide under the food dish and run around at night.
I've got another question. Would it be okay to feed Sun Dried Large Red Shrimp, I found them on Amazon but it says its for turtles and fish. Also, for Spirlina; do I need the human grade stuff or fish food spirlina.I saw one on amazon that had krill and other seafood added to it, its in flake form.

The foods you mentioned should be fine as long as they don't contain any ethoxyquin or copper sulphate.

Many reptile, fish, and human grade foods are fine to feed. But as Wai warned, watch for preservatives. Sun dried should be fine... that and dehydrated or freeze dried. Just be leery of freeze dried crickets:
