Moulting-Happy Crab

Post by MaxPlastic »

My crab Hephaestus has moulted literally like six times in the past four or five months. He's a medium sized guy and I didn't think he would moult as often as a little crab. As a result, he hangs out in plain view all day. He doesn't flinch or shell up when I come up to the tank. He's still active, eating and drinking, but sometimes he just sits there staring aimlessly. He also changes shells a lot, and is recently preferring shells that are too small (to me it seems) for him. Other than the 'weird' behavior, he seems fine... Should I be worried?

As long as he appears healthy and active, don't worry. He does moult a lot more often than normal though. Even one moult every two months is more frequent than normal. However, like I said, as long as he seems fine, don't worry too much.

I would make sure that he's getting plenty of good nutrition though. Focus on seaweeds and plenty of protein and chitin. That many molts have got to take a lot out of a crab, and I would worry he's depleting some of his body's stores. So a variety of seaweeds and protein such as copepods (freeze dried shrimp is good, and mealworms, fresh shrimp even better) and a good variety of vegetables that are rich in nutrients (not so much lettuce or cucumbers, for example, more like kale, spinach, broccoli, rich orange or red fruits and veggies, etc)

Good luck, he sounds like a fun crab!
