My Hermit Crab Feast!

Post by Hermies4Ever »

Hey, everybody!

I just created a masterpiece, today! It is a new recipe for my hermit crabs to try, containing the following ingredients:

- 2 strawberries
- Some crunched-up banana chips
- 1 carrot
- A small piece of broccoli
- 1 scrambled egg (shell included)

You are welcome to try it, with your own hermits! Mine seemed to enjoy it, and it is a very easy recipe to make and prepare, that does not require many ingredients, nor time. It is the first homemade meal I have ever made for my crabbies, and I am very excited and proud of myself!

P.S. Here is a picture of the creation of which I am babbling and bragging about, so you can see what I am talking about: (It is displayed as an attachment, just to give you a heads up.)

They are scavengers but this does not mean all foods are hermie safe either. In captivity they have no other choice but to eat what they are offered unlike scooting along the beach at night in the wild looking for food.

Alright, Ill probably get shunned for this, but crabs aren't always just offered organic foods. They will eat the potato chips left behind from a picnic, or some food washed up from a shipwreck, or they can be found underneath dumpsters at restaurants. I do believe that they should have a good diet in captivity since it's our job to provide the best care to our pets, but they don't eat that great in the wild.

No, you won't get shunned. The reason that we offer organic foods in our tank is that in the wild, crabs have a choice about what they eat. If they find a food that's covered in pesticides, they have the option to not eat it, and to get away from it before it harms them. The same with water - they drink out of all sorts of gross-looking puddles. Should we offer them gross-looking puddle water? No, because they can't go look somewhere else for water in our tanks like they can in the wild. That's why, in our tanks, we offer the highest quality safest stuff - they don't get a say in the matter as to whether that sand feels bad when they walk on it, or whether that water tastes funny.

Wow this was a great find for treats for the Hermies. Last night I got a nut and rinsed it in distilled water to remove any salt that was on it. And when it dried I just shaved a little nut into the food dish. I also soaked some regular lettuce in distilled water put that and the carrots (omg...they eat that like a banquet) I put that in two little shells so each fella has their own if possible. Well this morning I got up and so much lettuce was gone with the carrots. It is funny that they seem to know when I go to bed and it is quiet because about an hour or two later if i sneak up they are inside their food dishes. They must be thinking..." I wish she would hurry up and go to sleep already". lols
They wait for quiet and feel safe then. I am hoping that they will sometime feel comfortable enough to entertain themselves while I am up. They look like they are getting more red too. Especially Spiderman. They get the dried shrimp, crushed cuttlebone and their hermit crab food as directed here on the list of Accepted and Forbidden list.
I recommend everyone look at that. I have not fed them actually meat though off a bone but will continue on the nutrition to health them up. OMG, I wonder if I should get a bigger tank now. Love them. XD
