Quick question...I have well water that I use for my crabs. Should I be using the declorinator? I figured it wouldn't hurt to use, but I don't believe well water has chlorine in it...and I have been reading that if you don't need it, don't use it.
Thanks!

Re: Well water question
You're correct that your well water may not have chlorine in it, and chances are you do not have chloramine either. But, chances are the water from your well to your home is carried through some form of a metal piping or copper so a dechlorinator for metal should be used. The older the home/water lines the more metal can leech into the water. How often do you have your well water tested?

Re: Well water question
That I'm not sure...I'll have to ask my parents tomorrow. But all of our piping is PVC now I believe...we added onto the house a few years ago, and switched out the piping in the house. All my water comes from the kitchen sink, which I know for a fact has all new piping. Now the well I don't know about...I'm not sure what type of piping is used for that. Our house is over 25 years old...but we've done alot of work to it over the years.
Just looked at the bottle of what I have...It is Topfin Tap Water Dechlorinator (for fish) and says it removes Chlorine, Chloramine and heavy metals. Should I just keep using it?
Thanks!

Re: Well water question
If you use the well water I would suggest yes to keep using it.
I (and quite a few others) use distilled bottle water for the hermies water ponds. Now for expense reasons, as well as having to 'haul' water I do use tap water with a tap water conditioner for boiling certain items as well as after washing some items I give them a dip in the dechlor water... such as when we wash sand.

Re: Well water question
Ok, thanks! It's just convenient to use...It's the same stuff I use for my Betta's 2.5 gallon tank, so I always have it on hand. Cheaper too...in the long run I'll probably switch to using just distilled water if you think I should. Just can't right now due to small paychecks
And I've spent so much getting everything else they need...lol

Re: Well water question
Gizartoo2,
I too have well water, and I know I have some copper pipes so I always use the water treatment that neutralizes heavy metals.
I think it's a good idea. I only add a few drops to a half gallon, so I think this stuff could last for a few years, this little $5 bottle.
I'm considering switching to distilled water though, as I'm noticing a lot of hardwater buildup on the walls of my tank.
Not pretty.

Re: Well water question
Thanks
Yea I make my crabs water up by the gallon...have to add to it about once a week, but seems to be working out well. I have a gallon of distilled water downstairs for when i cook stuff for them though
