Question about Blaze

Post by Gizaroo »

Maybe I'm just being paranoid...but I am worried. I noticed yesterday Blaze was not being as active as he normally is (since I got him) and he's been in the same spot since this morning when I left for school. If something moves too close to the tank he'll pull up in his shell...otherwise this is what he's looked like since this morning. Is he getting ready to molt? Or what could be going on? Here's a pic.

It is not uncommon for hermies to be very active when we first bring them home. (almost as though they are looking for something familiar) Then after a couple days of scooting about it seems they do take a couple day break too, as though they wore themselves out. He may now feel comfortable enough too in order to finally relax a little and it is important that he does to destress his way. As hard as it is going to be, it would be best now to just leave him be for about a week or more. No more picture taking please he should have R&R. Not to mention all the gourmet type foods you'll be feeding, and offering the fresh and ocean/sea water daily. Now comes the hard part... patience. -.-

Oops, forgot to say too, the leg I can see does look a little pms'y.

Ok that makes me feel better :) and as for the picture I was a good 2 feet away. Didn't want to be up in his face.(and just wanted to make sure nothig was wrong) I haven't been messing with either of them since I got their tank straightened out and don't plan to except for feeding and watering :)

thanks!

Gizaroo2, would I be allowed to use that photo somewhere on the main site? It's a good photo that somehow reminds me of the torture that these poor guys have to go through before they finally arrive in a good home such as yours.

Back on topic, how deep is your bedding? The sand that he is sitting on looks a bit shallow. Is the sand deeper in other areas in the tank?

Be my guest. You an use any photos I post. Yea it's a little deeper in other areas of the tank. It was really shallow behind the pot because I added more after I put it in...and being that it's in a corner, and he was sitting there, I didn't want to try to add any behind the pot. It's about a half inch deep in most areas. I've been meaning to deepen it to about an inch throughout. How much should I put in there? I was told not to put enough for them to bury in. He's so small that I didn't know how much would be too much.

Being he is such a new hermie, may I suggest to wait for about another week or a little longer before adding more substrate? This will help him adjust to the humidity and temp as well as possibly eat a little more to help him destress. (per the PPS article)
But to help him adjust a little too, maybe talk a little in a soft voice while changing out the food and water? This should help him to relate the vibrations from your voice as meaning him no harm?

Your picture of Blaze reminds me of some new hermies I took into my home. I adopted them from a young lady who had just cleaned out their tank because of mites.
One of the hermies did just like your hermie - sitting and appearing to just stare out, in the same spot for a couple of days. He did end up moving, but all of them behaved in different manners that to me indicated that they were very stressed and so very unsure of their new world and new home.

It really is best to leave them be as much as possible, and do as Marie suggested, speaking in a soothing voice when changing food and water so they associate your voice with not only no harm, but also with good things like fresh water and food. :)

Thanks :) I'll do just that. The temp and humidity have been staying in about the same range for the last 2 days now...so I think I've found out a good balance for that :) (until I can get a plexiglass top)

Can I ask what you managed to get your temp settled to? I recall it was on the cool side and needed to come up. How did you manage to bring it up? :)

It's been staying around 78 the last 2 days...I think it's supposed to be around 80ish? I don't remember... But I got a screen top for my 5.5 gal aquarium, and stuck it in a plastic Petsmart bag, leaving about a half an inch of screen completely open for air circulation. My aquarium light sits on top of that, currently not in use (because of the plastic bag) but the bag seems to be helping keep enough heat in the tank with just the little bit of light coming through the window(coming around the curtain). :)

I also put in a moss pit today (just a small plastic container with the moss in it, with a piece of cork wood as a ramp to it) and hope that helps keep the humidity constant. I still need to figure out how to get my humidity gauge off the tank (since I stupidly forgot to calibrate it before putting it in) without breaking it...the tank has a warm tropical feel to it now, so I'm hoping the humidity is ok. I will be calibrating it tomorrow hopefully. Have already changed the food and water in the tank, and don't want to disturb the crabs anymore tonight.
