Okay, I'm going to Virginia beach tomarow, and read that their is a breed local to there called ''Pagurus pollicaris''. I was wondering if this is a land hermit crab or a water hermit crab? It is also known as the grey hermit crab, the shield hermit crab, and the flat-clawed hermit crab. I need to know what kind of crab this is asap!

Genus Pagurus are all marine hermit crabs. Land hermit crabs are of genus Coenobita, while the coconut crab is Birgus latro.

Ok thank you! I am going to hopefully save 2 crabs from a kiosk! They are in a wire pen and they're selling them from little cages with gravel and sponge and food! How horrible!!!

Well I did get a crab, they were sold at a jewelry shop!!!! The worst part is that he had a foot ball helmet on him, like a little plastic one! I said ''well ok, no problem, I can get it off'' Well i was wrong they hot glued the helmet to the shell!!!!! It's so sad and he was in with hundreds of crab with no room to move, Every one was crammed in a wire pen with no room on the ground! I gave him a pile of nutritious food and he ate it all! Oh and i've decided to name him spidercrab, because he can't sit still and manged to get on the roof of my cage! 
So he has found a new loving home away from the death trap, if only I could save more....

There are death traps everywhere, unfortunately. 
The law doesn't protect them because they aren't vertebrates. Society thinks 'crustaceans = food'.
