Newbie Concern!

Post by ShellyandGeorge »

Okay... so yes, we bought a hermit crab on vacation at the beach, yes it came in a painted shell... yes, we purchased one of those little plastic carrying cases things..... and yes, we have since updated to a 10 gallon tank, with coconut fiber substrate, 3 dishes for fresh water, salt water, and food, added some climbing toys, etc (more on all that later sometime), and purchased another hermit crab from a petstore so "shelly" has company - yes, "his" name is "george".

Anyways, since they have been in the new crabitat, George who seemed less active has become a little more active - though he still buries himself most of the day.

Shelly on the other hand, who was very active always moving around (probably trying to get out!), and who we used to let walk around some, has buried "herself" and I believe has started to molt.

HELP! Reading over threads and information I have become overwhelmed and also concerned.

Briefly (if possible), what do I need to do, or do I do nothing?!?

What is the volume of your main tank?

How many hermit crabs do you currently have? How big are they?

How long have you had the hermit crab(s) that you are concerned about?

What substrate or combination of substrates are you using? How deep is it?

What do you feed your hermit crabs?

Do you use distilled, bottled or tap water? If you are using a dechlorinator, what brand is it? Does it state to remove all heavy metals, chlorine and chloramines?

What brand of sea salt are you using to supply your hermit crabs with salt water?

What heat source are you using and where is it positioned?

Have you calibrated your thermometer(s) and hygrometer?

What is the air temperature range and humidity inside the tank? If you are using an under tank heater, what is the temperature range of the substrate (it is likely to be different to the air temperature range)?

Do you have any photos of your tank or hermit crab(s) of concern? If yes, please attach them to your post.

---

I would suggest not fiddling with your hermit crabs until about five days later. Let them destress and adjust to their new home.
