Booklice...

Post by emmac350 »

Well, I have booklice in the 30g. I've done a bit of research and have found two facts about them that caught my eye:

1. Hard to get rid of and oftentimes come back to a tank quickly after removal attempts
2. Don't actually harm crabs, they eat mold and fungi and other stuff like that in the tank

So now I'm slightly grossed out, and yet at the same time thinking they're going to have to stay for the time being. Reason being that Toodles has just buried herself in ISO (she better molt fast, that bugger) and I know for sure I have at least 3 crabs buried and at least one that's molting (Spaz has been down for almost a month now with no smell or anything). I'm not doing a deep clean without an ISO I can use if need be, so booklice are going to have to stay for a bit.

I haven't found anything that says that predatory mites will work with them, and these guys are hard enough to see that I'm not too worried about it, but it is somewhat disconcerting. Any advice?

I'm thinking you should call the guy at Evergreen Growers and ask him about the hypoaspis miles getting rid of book lice. My guess is that they definitely would. They dont' eat adult bugs, they eat larvae, and I dont think they would discriminate on the species. :)
he is very helpful and friendly, and he saved me some bucks!

What is it now, though, bug season? Gee whiz. lol. Everybody getting bugs!

I agree with CrabbyJo. Whereas booklice are not known to be harmful to hermies it is not known as to if the numbers were very high if that in itself would stress the hermies. The tank is close enough to being a breeding ground for most pests and soon could reach astronomical levels too.
What it boils down to most times is during the winter/cold months the pest are looking for food to eat as well as the dampness and warmth they need to survive too.
