What Flowers add Color and are safe?

Post by CrabbyJo »

Someone asked me a question that I thought I'd share the answer to here, so everyone can benefit and give some input with their own experience too.

For those wondering what flowers give color, I'd say all of them do, and our little guys do really enjoy a nice fresh flower petal to munch on.
There are some things to remember though. NEVER EVER give your crab flower petals from a florist's flower. They are heavily treated with pesticides and chemicals to keep them fresher longer, and can be deadly to your crabs.

If you feed flowers, pick petals from flowers not growing near the side of a road, due to toxin buildup from exhaust fumes and other contaminants kicked off the road by cars (oil, gas, antifreeze, etc.).

Only pick flower petals from flowers you know have never been exposed to pesticides, even from a neighbor spraying his flowers next door and the pesticides that could have been carried on the wind.

There are some flowers you will never want to give your hermies as they can also be toxic. Here is a good website with some food info for your hermit crabs: http://hermitcrabcuisine.com/
This contains a safe food list.
There are more links I am sure others will share, I am at the end of my break at work and dont have my list of links here to cut and paste in. :)

How about the Epicurian Hermit? http://www.epicurean-hermit.com/index.php?topic=332.0 I'm not sure they list plants but It's always a good thing to print off and keep on your fridge door or something?

That's a good site too, but keep in mind that list has not been updated, as far as we know, for at least two years, since it was compiled by LolaGranola, who is now retired from crabbing. So there could be a lot of good foods that could be added to that list. :)

Vicki's been good about at least responding to threads asking about non-listed foods' safeness. So a quick search on the site can pull up the info easily.

No, LolaGranola has not retired from crabbing is owner of the updated food site Hermit Crab Cuisine, and Naturally Crabby. It is Julia_Crab who had claimed to have compiled the food list on EH, (but really was complied by others as well... and Lola gives proper credit on her site... Where did the list come from? ) that seems it hasn't been updated since about 2005...
Now the bottom of the list at http://www.epicurean-hermit.com/index.php?topic=332.0 Does say it was updated November 2009, but from what I can tell the update only divided the foods into categories.

Is there a good/bad food list on here somewhere?

There is a link in this thread mentioning a safe food list: Safe Foods
Oh hey, here's a good website that has safe/unsafe foods listed. it too is about 2 yrs out of date, but so is the other list that is generally suggested.

Retired from crabbing? Oh my no! Is that even possible?

HCC needs to be finished, I know I know. Life has gotten in the way and it is a tremendous amount of work but this is a good reminder. I'm very proud of it so far and I would like to complete it!

I do stay abreast of all the current foods that are approved and do answer emails when I get them. :)

See Lola, I got myself all confused! So it's Julia Crab who has retired, okay, I got it. :)

Thanks Lola, and it's completely understandable having life get in the way of getting things done! lol
Happens to me all the time. Sigh. :P

Thanks for the clarification, ladies!
