Chirping please help!

Post by saranita »

My hermit crabs are in a tank in my room. I was sitting on my bed at night just now and one randomly started chirping, so i got up to see what was going on. All three crabs are in different parts of the tank. So I thought ok w.e and went back to what I was doing, now the chirping started again for a few seconds and stopped. I don't know if i should be worried or not so please help me figure this out. My one Momiji (who i think was the one chirping) fell off a piece of corkwood earlier onto a coco-hut and I'm scared that might have something to do with it.. Only think is the drop was no more than 3-4 inches so I'm unsure..

If the hermit crabs are far apart from each other (i.e. not fighting), then I wouldn't worry about the chirping. It's great to hear them make some sounds once in a while.

Yes, you should stop worrying. :)
When I hear chirping, I check to see if any two are near each other and watch carefully to see if someone is being harrassed. Otherwise, it's just fascinating. It doesn't always mean they feel threatened, we think. Marie has a crab that likes to sit up on a log and chirp sometimes, for no apparent reason. lol.

Please provide the links to these posts so we can put a little reply to them regarding feeding the junk to their hermies.

Actually they eat more than you think they do. it's very important to feed them a wide variety of foods, even if you think you don't see them eating it. Some foods I'll put in and they won't touch them the first few times (or don't seem to, I can't always tell, they take such tiny bits!) and then one time they'll eat it like crazy. You really just have to keep rotating foods in and out. Remember, in the wild, they roam all over the place picking out what they need and eating all kinds of things. Since we have them caged up, it's up to us to make sure we give them a good variety.

Stay away from giving your hermies foods that have chemicals in them (most food that is processed) or may have pesticides on them.

I've only heard one of my crabs chirp! That is when I bought my first two home in those stupid wire cages they sell you at the beach. I didn't know what he wanted or needed. I went on line and checked it out and have been hooked ever since. BTW I still have Annie & Edna & I have never heard any of them chirp since! Lette
