Re: New crab vs old crab
The new hermie should be iso'ed from your original hermie. He still has his wild instincts where he feels he must fight for food, water, and shells. Iso him for at least a week until he adjusts to having these things 24/7 and realizes there is no need to fight for them. If he shows any signs of illness, keep him iso'ed longer.
If your are not able to iso this newbie, divide your tank so he has his own area to adjust in for at least a week.

Re: New crab vs old crab
Whenever you get new hermies you should always keep them in ISO for at least a week. First, like Marie stated, they need to realize they can have food, water, shelter whenever they want. It also will give you a chance to make sure the hermie doesn't have mites or is sick. I then like to bathe mine in the same water as the regular tank so everyone smells the same, or you can just give everyone who's up a bath. Hope that helps

I would make sure he gets servings of meat and egg. I think lack of protein is the most important factor in aggression.
