What kind of Hermies are my crabs?

Post by Salt and Pepper »

I am sorry I do not currently have a picture; it is on my Digital Camera. I've read guides and have seen pictures, but they don't seem to help! Can you help determine what my crabs are?

Salt- He is very shy. His claw is half white and half red. He is orange, white, and red.

Pepper- This is mainly the one I don't know what he is. He is a bright red-purple color, has bright, neon orange antenna, his eyes are oval shaped and kind of gray, and has a flat deep-red claw. I think he is a Straw, but I'm not sure.

Without pictures of the eyes, eye stalks, large pincher and left rear walking leg there is no way to tell what species a hermie is. Have you tried going to the actual photo site for HCP and creating an album to share your pictures?

Try out the Species Identifier tool that I made.

Exoskeleton colours are generally unreliable to use to identify a species. C. cavipes are very rare, so I doubt you have one. I have not seen any C. perlatus with purple anywhere on their bodies. You probably have PPs, the most common species in the USA. However, photos are always necessary for accurate identifications.

Transfer the photos from your camera to your computer via a USB cable. Remember where you saved those photos. Go to our Gallery and go to "Upload Files". Click the Browse button and find where you saved those photos. Do this for each photo, then click "Upload"... it's really just that simple.

I encourage everyone to upload their photos to the Gallery. Rather than posting them on this Forum, simply provide a link to the photos in your post.

Dear Wai, the crab I assume to be a Perlatus doesn't have any purple actually on it. It is more like red with a purple tint. Also can be called, "deep red."

You really need to check out the species ID. If you have a strawberry, then special care is required for them to survive and thrive. :D

I think it is a Strawberry. I've checked an identification chart, and it looks just like him. He has NO purple on him, just a "purple-red" claw. It has no actual purple, it is a deep bright red claw. He met all the qualififcations for a Strawberry
. Hemitite Looking Eyes
.Bright Orange Antenna
.Small, Flat, Claw
.Bright Red Color

He is definately a Straw'. What is my other one? I'm guessing it's a Cav., but they're rare.

Did you try using the Species Identifier tool on your suspect cav?

Straws do not have a "Purple-red claw", their pinchers are also the color of strawberry's. They also have white 'pores' throughout their large pincher and legs... they do resemble that of a strawberry.

Edited to ask, how much did you pay for this hermie at the festival?

His claw is a deep red on one side, but it's mostly bright red. He also has white pores, and both of my crabs were $7.00.

That's definately sounds like a straw! Be careful with him cause you have two rare species. Do you know the care requirements for taking care of a straw?
