Worried about a crab

Post by kennedy_family_mom »

I have medium crabs. First one bought in October 2007, didn't know anything about them at that time...my mom bought him for my daughter at Myrtle Beach. We gave him a friend in January this year, and set up a nice crabitat, after doing a lot of research. I've got $350 into these crabs so far!

Anyway, that first crab has never molted...nor has he changed shells. I was very worried about him.

A month ago, he buried, and I was so relieved, finally he was going to molt! But he resurfaced 2 weeks later, looking the same. Stayed on the surface for 2-3 days, and reburied in the same location. He was under for 4 days, resurfaced last night, and then went under again in a different location of the tank.

Is it likely that he will molt this time?

Hermies are weird like that. They wait until the conditions are perfect for them until they molt. They can postpone molts with a certain horomone they have. Maybe the conditions aren't completely constant? That might be why he's resurfacing. Either that or mites. I don't think that mites is the likely thing though. As for the shell changing, if a hermie finds a shell that is perfect for them, they won't move out until they ABSOLUTELY have to. I wouldn't worry about the shell changing. One of my E's, Xena, refuses to change shells even though hers is WAY too small for her. Good luck! :)
