My new hermit crabs moulting?
I bought four hermit crabs about 5 days ago. 2 small 2 medium. all of them are digging constantly in their new 10gallon tank with a little over an inch of sand. The two largecrabs are currently to large for their shellsso i am putting in a few empty ones now. when i spray of lift them, they are capable of moving and crawling around just fine. the big one is always very active when i play with him. the cage has a small fresh and a small saltwater dish. it also had a small shell for food. i mist the cage alot and it is at about 87% humidity in the middle and without the heat lap on, it is 60, but with it on, it is around 80-90F. are they moulting or what. shouldi handle them, or mist them. should i isolate each one with bottle tops?

87 is a little to high for them...try to keep it around the low 80's high 70's if possible (mist less) and don't mist them directly. If you're saying the temp is 60 then that is way to low...and with the lamp on 90 is WAY to high. Try a lower wattage bulb to keep the tank consistently around 75-80 degrees. From the sound of things they could be digging for one of two reasons and as you stated they could be preparing to molt (increase your substrate depth...it sounds like it may be too shallow. The other reason is that they may be trying to escape the conditions when it is either to hot to cold to humid to dry.

Re: My new hermit crabs moulting?
I wonder if mine are just digging to hide from the environment, mine have dug under the sand again after they came up (when I accidently found them when taking out a coconut shell from the sand), they dug right down again. I have the humidity and temp to what I should or at least the gauge for temp and humidity says is right. I moved the tank the other day because the table they are on needed to be used and I found Kermi on the bottom again, they have been down for about 1 or maybe 2 weeks again and she is not doing anything, she looks the same so I am sure she didn't molt, she isn't that big so I figured she would be done by now but who knows I hope they come up soon, I miss them. When they were up around 2 weeks ago Kermi changed shells then the next morning she was burried down again. Soupy dug down after just a few hours of being up, she didn't even eat or anything, I bathed them both in the salt water and put them back after playing with them for a while. Who knows I just hope they molt or come up so I can stop having a empty tank.
