Picture of an exoskeleton

Post by krabby_katie »

Jorgen had a surface molt. So, this is what his exoskeleton looked like. I took the picture last week. Here's a picture for the curious: (click the picture, it's a lot bigger)

Do you have that substrate all over the tank? Could that be why he surface molted because he had no where to dig under and molt? Oh and by the way great picture. I wondered what it looked like. So he is in the shell next to it then? I would love to see a picture of the exo and newly molted crab, it would be cool to see what he looks like after the molt.

Due to family issues my crabs have been adopted out to wizkidsmom (Cheryl), I know she will care for them like I did. Thanks Cheryl

You must supply Jorgen with plenty of calcium and spirulina to compensate for Hubert's selfish act, if you want to save him. Our Doctor has been formulating her calcium theory for years and believe me, she'd be urging you to supply Jorgen with plenty of calcium if you want any chance of Jorgen surviving.

I put a lot of crushed cuttlebone in there and stuff like that. He won't eat though...

Can you get some shrimp from the grocery store? Not pre-packaged. The shrimp have exo's on them, you could offer him those and hopefully that would help as well. Also offer spirulina, honey, cuttlebone, proteins. Keep the foods right by him so he has a chance of getting to them.

I think you should try hand-feeding him. Get a toothpick or a new, cleaned paint brush. Grind the cuttlebone until it is a fine powder. Put a small dab of honey on the toothpick/brush and sprinkle some of the cuttlebone powder onto it. Then position the toothpick/brush in front of Jorgen's mouthparts and wait for him to reach out for the honey and cuttlebone powder with his mouthparts.

If you don't try, the chances are that Jorgen will fail to harden and die. You may as well give hand-feeding a try. If he doesn't eat, then he will be unlikely to recover.
