Re: ek
usually crabs that come home from down the shore aren't in the right environment. the little crab shouldn't be in water completely but should have a dish of it or a shell of fresh water with a sponge to drink from. you'll want to get him into a Critter holder or a small tank with sand as soon as you can. the poor little thing is probably trying to moult.
if you visit thecrabbagepatch.com they have several sections that describe how the tank or crabitat should be set up. http://www.thecrabbagepatch.com/crabitat.html
they also have a section on moutling.
i could spend all day trying to tell you everything but they have pictures and explain it pretty well. I've never had a crab lose limbs before but it doesnt sound pretty.
i hope this helps and im sure you'll get lost of replies soon. I wish you the best!

Re: ek
I have had hermies that have lost a limb they can survive from it. I usually look in the stores for the ones missing limbs. They can grow they back during their next molt. Is it a land hermit crab? or did you get it in the water? Land hermit crabs need to have access to water but not be in water all the time. They need to have sand to be on and dig in. They dig down in the sand for several different reasons. They dig for fun or when they get cold or hot and they dig to molt. I would get the tank as soon as you can if Wed is the soonest try to make it as comfortable as possible with food and water and hings to climb on and hide in.
