Moulting

Post by Evan »

Is it ok if there are other crabs in the same tank as the ones that are moulting?

Its better not to have other crabs in the same tank because they might end up eating the molting crab. If two crabs are molting in one tank, some people have suggested that there be dividers to separate them.

I agree, they are very vunerable and other crabs may attack them. I think it's a "fishy" smell that attracts them?

I myself have never caught a hermie before a molt and therefor I have several down olting at a time in my main tank. I have 65 hermies and I have never had a problem but if you can catch them before they go down by all means go ahead and ISO them.

i agree. when they're getting ready to shed their exo, they're really sensitive and vulnerable, hence why they bury themselves. yes matt, when they first shed their skin, their new skin hasn't hardened yet and they can give off a slight fishy smell.

it's kind of hard to separate hermies when they're under molting bc usually you don't know where they are. I have 5 hermies molting right now. I would love to change the sand but with my 2 jumbos under....lol. I hope Adam and I can get a place soon so then we can find a 30 gal tank and move the crabs into it as they come up lol

It could be a first time molting so it is taking longer. I would give it another week at least then maybe careful check on it. If you can see under the tank you might be able to see the buried hermie and see if it is moving around or not.
