HELP!!!

Post by 4cutecrabbies »

Hello to everyone! Ok, so I signed up today and this is my first time posting...sorry it is under such crumby circumstances!! *|

We have 4 Hermit Crabs, 2 of them were bought at the same time from the same tank (Debbie & Crabby Pattie). The third one (Rocky) is from the same store but we purchased him at a different time, and the forth one(Tiny) was bought at a completely different store than the other three. So here is my problem, Crabby Pattie is following Tiny around and "messing" with him until he goes into his shell. I have one of those coconut huts for them to hide-out in, and when I peeked inside of it this morning everyone was in there except for Rocky, and Crabby Patty was standing over Tiny (who by the way is the smallest of the three, and was in his shell) and the only way I can explain to everyone what he was doing is to say that it looked just like I have seen Tarantulas act right before they bite. (In the pet store, I hate spiders!!!) He was standing up tall, almost like his front feet were airborne, and he was resting on his shell, except that he was "stamping" his two front claws on the ground. This went on for at least two hours that I saw. So I took them both out to examine them, and Tiny has a missing leg I believe! :( Now before I even brought Tiny home I picked Debbie up one morning to notice that she has a missing leg and her small pincher. We had had them for at least three months before she started missing limbs, and her and Crabby Patty never fought at all, he still doesn't seem to fight with Debbie or Rocky, just Tiny. So...my question is, what is he doing? Is he fighting or showing some sort of dominance? It can't be a shell fight...at least I wouldn't think so because Tiny is much smaller so his shell wouldn't even fit...and I have 10+ extra shells that I just put into the tank! I'm confused! What's going on?
Thanks so much!!
Jenn :D

Hmm. I think that you should isolate Tiny. He seems to be a victim and an aggressor. I'm not too sure how long to isolate him for, considering I'm isolating one of my crabs for the first time tonight. I'm having the same problem. I brought home two new crabs. One of the older ones, Xena, has been messing with a new one, Calypso. Hope someone with more experience with isolating crabs can help you out!

Tiny isn't the one that needs to Isolated. Crabby Patty is the one who needs to be put in "time out". He seems to be the one causing the problems. Did you have Rocky when you realized Debbie was missing her leg? I would plae Crabby Patty in ISO for about a week and try him/her back in the tank and see if it happens again or if it is still happening when Crabby is out. If it happens again when you place Crabby back in then you may have to do 2 tank set ups. Maybe get anoter micro to put in with Tiny if it is only him Crabby messes with. They will regrow their claw and legs when they molt. They usually drop legs when they are stressed.

Thanks so much for the support and advice you guys! I picked them all up to "study" them yesterday and noticed what I thought could possibly be a "molting bubble?" (not sure what their technical name is :D ) on Tiny. So I isolated him yesterday, and when I went back a few hours later to check on him, he was buried!!! He for the most part that I can tell hasn't moved much since. This will be the first molt any of them have had, and Debbie and Crabby Patty have been a part of our family since the end of March. So we bring this little guy home and wouldn't you know it, but not even 1 week later...down he goes! So....don't they sometimes give off a kind of "pre-molting" smell that could attract other Hermies to come over and bother them? If so, then that would explain a lot, because I have never noticed Crabby Patty being hateful before this. He is a VERY active and friendly crab, so when he's running or climbing around the tank he has no problems with pushing anyone else out of the way, or using them as a step stool to reach, but he has never caused any problems! So I'm not sure about the leg on Tiny, probably stress then huh? And as for Debbie...well if it wasn't another Crab (and at this point I really don't think that it is) then hers was definitely stress related. She was a very shy timid Hermie from day one, and on top of that I have traded up on their homes twice, and brought in two new crabs! Poor thing, she will come out and talk to me and let me feed her now though...so hopefully she is starting to get more comfy with all of the changes!! Anyway, sorry for the book guys...TWICE! *|
Thanks so much for all of your help!
