One of my hermies is really shy. I'm not sure if it's because of stress, or something. If I set him on my hand, it'll take 5 minutes or more for him to come out. When he does end up coming out, he's VERY jumpy and nervous. Can anyone help me figure out why Hubert is sooo shy?

Some hermies are just shy by nature. Some are because of the conditions they have been through. All I can say is patience. Just keep taking him/her out and hold them. They can come to trust you and can become very friendly.

Thanks for the advice. I'm not very patient. I have to wait for about 5 minutes, being completely still, for him to come out. I keep trying to handle him as much as possible. Hopefully he'll do away with his shyness soon.

I had one that was so shy. After he molted he was not shy at all.

My hermie Richard was really shy and would never come out. One day while i was watching tv i took him out and set him on my leg and waited for him to tickle me when he came out. It took a while but i put him on the floor and he was running al over and was very active when I put him back in the tank. It just takes a while.

That's cool. Yeah, i do that sometimes. He's so incredibly jumpy. If i move a hand near him, he curls back up into his shell faster than a blink of the eye. Oh well. Hopefully he'll warm up to me more in time.

Just work with him, hold him every day. They just have to get used to you.
