how do i know if my hermit crabs are eating or not ?

There's no definite answer, besides witnessing them eating. Even if food disappears from the dish, the hermit crabs may have dragged it away to play with, and whether or not they ate it afterwards is uncertain.

I like to put things in w/ clean edges, like cubes of vegetables and fruits, or whole leaves so that I can see pinch marks as evidence. Chances are pretty good that if there is footprints in the dish, or pooh, or if the food is dragged off, that they did some eating.
