Cuttlebone chunks flavored with tea! Orange is rooibos, yellow is chamomile, blue is hibiscus.

Where did you get that? That's really cool. Do the hermies like it? How much is it?

how long does it last in the tank? do you put all of it in there? does it replace other food or is it more of a treat?

how long

Post by Jedi_Sena »

Well, I would only put in one chunk at a time. I have always kept a chunk of cuttlebone in the shell dish so they have access to calcium block anytime they want. In the shell dish, the cuttlebone stays dry, but if you put it on the wet substrate or the crabs drag it there, then it will get kinda funky.
It definitly does not replace other food and is meant only as a calcium supplement. There are obviously traces of the beneficial components of the teas I chose to dress them up with.

Great question! Keep 'em coming!

I saw the flavored cuttlebone when I was looking around on TCP site. When I go there in March I'll get some. I'm glad Tammy is carrying more food made by forum members. It's all I'll buy. Same with shells except for Naples.

awesome! i'll have to try some after my life has calmed down a bit. so you keep a little of the cuttlebone in the tank at all times? do you take it out when you mist the tank so it won't get wet, or do you mist? is it soft enough to cut with a knife? if you keep it dry it lasts longer right?

It can be mashed into a powder and poured over foods. The hermies can pick pieces off with their claws.

keep it dry

Post by Jedi_Sena »

It will last longer if you keep it dry, so removing it while you mist is a great idea. But you can also grind it up and add it to wet foods if you prefer. You would have to be very careful if you try to cut them with a knife because the pieces I've prepared are small. It is somewhat like chalk, soft, but you would have some trouble getting a knife through it. You might have better results using a cheese grater.
