Thanks for the condolences. Actually, I did find the reference to iodine, but I had misunderstood it. Iodine in table salt (very bad for crabs) may be linked to problems shedding exo. So it is not an iodine deficiency. Crabs get the right kind of iodine from eating seafood and seaweeds.
My crabs do not get anything w/ tablesalt, so I don't know what else could cause Tonka's exo to stick.

IODINE

(There was no detailed explanation provided, just that basic statement.) So it is not an iodine deficiency. Crabs get the right kind of iodine from eating seafood and seaweeds.

seaweed
Healthfood stores or Asian markets have seaweeds or sea vegetables for sale. Some of the ones I've seen are:
Spirulina (probably the best seaweed ever w/ lots of nutritional value, in fact some say that you could completely replace commercial food w/ this one plant)
Nori
Dulce
The seaweed wrappers that you make sushi out of (check for harmful ingredients like salts and seasonings) might be used.
You can buy seaweed products at a petstore too, like algae wafers (sold as fish food). I bought something called "Seaweed Selects" which is 100% natural dried seaweeds or Green Marine Algae, but unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be a hit w/ the crabs. I should try to serve it wet so that it stinks a little to get their attention.

expense seaweed
Well, kinda expensive. I bought a pkg of "seaweed selects" green marine algae at the petstore for about $6 (30g). I know you can buy ground dulce at the healthfood store (sold w/ the salt as a salt substitute) for about $2, but I've heard spirulina is expensive, but have never priced it. The last few days I've been reading about seaweeds and it seems they won't eat it unless it is in something they really like so it should be sprinkled on top or mushed into something tasty. (Like kids loving broccoli if it is smothered in cheese.)
