Aussie crabs - are they normally different colours??

Post by appps »

Strange question maybe but all of mine are a sort of light yellow cream colour. Range in size from small to medium. They have been that colour the whole time I've owned them basically.

In pet shop today and noticed theirs were lots of different colours? There were really pale almost white ones, really dark almost an orange brown and everything in between.

Is this normal or do the different colours reflect their health in some way?

Mine are a range of different colours. Some are consistently darker than others or are orange/brown rather than grey in colour.

Ah interesting. I hadn't realized there could be that much difference since ours are all so similar.

We are getting two new ones next week (they are getting a new shipment tues about 11am apparently and as they are not kept in good conditions don't want to gamble on their poor existing stock) so will try and get darker ones. Might be able to tell who is who after a shell change for once that way.

I have only seen pictures of the Aussie hermies and have been amazed at how some of the colors can vary. An older crabber (no longer crabbing) use to question if it was due to where they were harvested from, and certainly can depend on their diets too...

Yeah I'm wondering about diet as we bought ours in two lots from two different stores yet all the same colour as per my avatar.

Got two new ones yesterday(decided not to support bad pet shop and drove 45 mins to better one), will be interesting if they end up the same colour too. Currently more brown than cream.
