The link Wai provided includes the link to the glass 'gems' I use. They are sort of flatter and smooth, no jagged edges.
As for the electrical tape I would suggest against it as well as duct tape. The UTH's (at least the ones here in U.S.) are made of a vinyl. When vinyl warms it gives off a little oily substance and after a bit of time the UTH begins to slip some and makes for a sticky gooey mess. As Wai mentioned they do loose their stick sometimes after time. This does not mean they no longer work but they begin to 'sag'' and the full benefit of the heat is lost. I use aluminum foil balls (I made them and they are smooth) in a few places to hold the UTH's up. (and even the new one I bought within this past year I put foil balls under it. They seem to sag at the most inconvenient times)
