Re: Question about my tanks

We're experiencing some balmy weather for this time of year, so if it were me I would wash the sand by the week end... This would help with the drying process too so it could be baked to sterilize it.

It does take quite awhile, and we have a 2 batch system here so we have one to go in while the other is being cleaned.

Thanks! I guess I need to go buy another bag to have some in the tank while I clean the existing. Unfortunately I work weekends, (12 hr shifts) and won't be able to do the deep clean until next week. I am working evenings this week, and though the weather is really nice, I've been so busy doing other stuff that I don't know if I'll get a chance to get to the store and get some new sand and wash the old stuff/start the process of drying it before I have to leave for work. :/

I understand about having things to do. This is an unusual balmy snap we are having so we are taking advantage of doing a few things outdoors ourselves in attempts to not need to do them in the cold.
Our extra sand after it is cleaned, I keep in the storage containers that have the locking snaps on the sides. I make sure the sand is cooled, and with the snapping lids it is almost air tight where no little creepy crawlers can get access to it. :)

Well, I got the sand changed out today...spent about 50 bucks between 2 bags of the stuff and a couple other small things I needed. I boiled all the wood that was in the tank and it's currently drying.
One bag of sand somehow got damp and I didn't notice it until I had opened it up...it was the last bag on the shelf too. Hopefully that will dry out soon...I have the bag open and dumped a small bit in the 5.5 gal tank. All the crabs are in the 10 gal right now and seem to be doing fine. There's 6 total, but Banjo and Blu are twice the size of the other 4, so I think they'll all be ok in there temporarily.

I have the old sand in some air tight containers til next week when I can actually get it cleaned.

Is the 10 gal too small to keep all 6 crabs in? Just wondering, as I'm not sure exactly when I'll get the 5.5 gal set up again with having to work this weekend. 4 of them are small-smaller than a golf ball (Skip, Theo, Luka, and the new E), and Banjo and Blu are mediums I guess. They're a little bigger than a golf ball. They're all getting along very well. Will have more hiding spots/climby things to put back in the tank soon once everything is dry.

Here's some pics of the tank (and some of the hermies) now...the sand for the 5.5 gal is still drying...I haven't decided if I'm going to keep all 6 in the 10 gal for now or not. They are getting along great, and seem to enjoy each other's company.

I had to remove all the wood, except the current piece, as I have discovered that was the source of the musty smell coming from the tanks. I don't think I am going to be able to put it back in there...so now I have to find some other source of climbing things. Right now they all have a bunch of pots to hang out in and climb around on.

Do you guys have any suggestions for making the wood usable again? some of it was choya cactus wood and the other was a piece of grapevine. I'm assuming some mildew got into the pores of the wood, and I boiled it already, but it still stinks, and definitely cannot go back in the tank anytime soon.

Sorry for the links...my webpage kept closing when I tried to post thumbnails.
