He died.
This is my second hermie death in my short time of being a crabber. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong!!!

Re: Semi-surface molt?
I'm really sorry to hear you have lost another crab. The only thing I can suggest is to keep asking questions, keep reading, this website is pretty good and the info on www.hermitcrabpatch.com i have found to be very good as well. You will find lots of contradictory information and the best thing you can do is to read and research as much as you can and try to make the best decisions you can for your crabs. Your two babies may have just endured to much stress and had delayed moulting for so long that the process was just too difficult for them. It sounds like you are doing everything you can for them, but keep asking questions and keep reading.

Re: Semi-surface molt?
You may be doing very little wrong and just unfortunate in adopting two already very sick crabbies, so take comfort in that you rescued them from really bad conditions and at least made their last days more comfortable. It may be worthwhile to answer these questions again in as much detail as possible just to get opinions from the crew here on your care practices.
What is the volume of your main tank?
TYPE HERE
How many hermit crabs do you currently have? How big are they?
TYPE HERE
How long have you had the hermit crab(s) that you are concerned about?
TYPE HERE
What substrate or combination of substrates are you using? How deep is it?
TYPE HERE
What do you feed your hermit crabs?
TYPE HERE
Do you use distilled, bottled, tap or other types of water?
TYPE HERE
If you are using a dechlorinator, what brand is it? Does it state to remove all heavy metals, chlorine and chloramines?
TYPE HERE
What brand of sea salt are you using to supply your hermit crabs with salt water?
TYPE HERE
What heat source are you using and where is it positioned?
TYPE HERE
Have you calibrated your thermometer(s) and hygrometer so that you can interpret accurate readings?
TYPE HERE
What is the air temperature range and humidity inside the tank?
TYPE HERE
If you are using an under tank heater, what is the highest temperature that the substrate reaches?
TYPE HERE
Do you have any photos of your tank or hermit crab(s) of concern? If yes, please attach them to your post.

Again, very sorry to hear about your loss.

Re: Semi-surface molt?
lilhoney42380 I am so sorry to hear he has passed. But he was a newer hermie and there is a high chance that he already had irreversible damage done to him prior to you bringing him home. Best we can do then is to try to make them as comfortable as possible. To molt so soon after being captured at times is just too much on top of all they have already been through.

Re: Semi-surface molt?
Same here, Hygiea moulted not too long after I took her home and she failed to harden fully and died.
