It's on the list of safe foods. I wash mine thoroughly and just leave them in the tank so the crabs can munch on them whenever they want to. They stay in for a couple of weeks.

Hermit crabs cant live on shells alone...It would be kind of like a person trying to live off of calcium supplements. They really dont get energy out of the shells or any of the other necessary vitamins and such they need. You would still need to add and take out food the same way. There would just be an eggshell next to it (which is great)

Leathery tree leaves like cottonwood and maple last pretty long in the crab tank before molding. My crabs always have fresh leaves or dried leaves somewhere in their tank. But you still need to be changing out food selections often.

I typed the word "Ants" in the search bar in the upper right corner of the screen and there is a post about ants that should be of some help:

It's okay, we get so caught up in trying to figure things out that we get used to asking all the time, and forget we have a wealth of information at our fingertips. I've done the same, and I should know better. I love to research and read. :)
