I think Skip is about to molt too...

Post by Gizaroo »

I was tidying up Skips half of the tank today (his water had spilled and some other stuff) and peeked at his sides where he is missing the legs...he has some good sized gel legs there!!! I think he's been munching on the moss these last few days...but I gave him a piece of krill tonight and some ground seaweed and some fruit pieces. He's currently under the moss.

I'm going to pick up a coconut hut tomorrow to stick in there with him...the only hiding spots he has currently is the moss and the small cork wood piece in there. Anyone have any better thoughts on what I should stick in there with him? or should I just cover the tank with a towel?

Thanks in advance!

Moss should be used damp so not to pull moisture from the hermie. Cocohuts can mold sometimes when on damp substrate so you may want to consider something that will be a little more resistant to mold.

I've been keeping the moss damp. I found the plastic container he came in...cut a whole in that and set it over top of him. The moss is on the opposite side of where he just walked and is sitting currently next to a shell. I set it over top of him. . Will that work?

Should be as long as he isn't disturbed. But if he is alone I wouldn't worry about it, he will find a place where he is comfy and do his deed there.

Alright, thanks! He seems to be doing really well. Couldn't believe how much his gel legs had grown since I last saw them.

edited to add......SKIP just moulted!!!! :D I saw what looked like he had fallen out of his shell...so looked a little closer (he was right at the edge of the aquarium near the moss pit) and it is actually his exoskeleton! He's all tucked up in his shell. :D

From what I can see of him so far, he looks great! He's a light orange color and his eyes are super bright. He's got orange antennae too. Wonder what color he'll be once his exo is done hardening fully. He's munching away on his exo now

Congratulations on the molt!!

Edited to add:
BTW, I would suggest to leave Skip where he is now as opposed to moving him to the main tank. :P

Yea, I'm going to leave him and the other two in the 5.5 gal tank for awhile haha :) Don't want to take any chances until his new exo is nice and hard!

Sounds like my boyfriends brother may be wanting to take his crabs back. I have them in the proper conditions currently, and they're thriving. I think one of them is about to moult. I'm going to try to talk him into letting me keep them until he has a definite setup that they will have proper humidity and temperature and also until this one moults. I have a feeling going back into their old conditions may kill them since they've adjusted to what they need :/

Is he protected from the other 2 so there is no way possible for them to get to him?
