Re: I think my tank has mites!

Post by CrabbyJo »

Salt and Pepper,
Here is a link to what a grain mite looks like:Grain Mite

Here is an article about mites and tank pests: Tank Pests

And a more thorough one with links to pictures of the insects themselves: Bug guide

I did notice in the section on Grain or Mold mites that it mentions a sweet/minty odor. How do you smell this over the EE and tank smell? I am not doubting, I am curious. Wondering if there is a way I can smell it too in my tank. :)

I also noticed mites in my tank again today. I had them last year around March or April.
I noticed them around the food dish in the iso tank with EE substrate, so looked hard in my main tank and didn't see any movement. Unfortunately my sand is the exact same size and color as the grain mite.

When removing the food (I leave it in for 2-3 days sometimes, depending on whats in the dish) I noticed one piece of food that looked to be covered in sand, but on closer inspection, what looked like sand settling, was actually mites moving all over! It STILL looked just like my sand, but kept on moving. I totally creeped out!

So I've ordered some predatory mites and those should be here within a few days. My tank is just too big to be doing all the cleaning necessary, as I really don't have the time what with work and family.

So in preparation I've put a thick vaseline line around the top edges of my main tank and iso tank to prevent any mites from possibly escaping. I was hoping to do a deep clean soon, but will have to wait now until the mites have done their business, which can take quite a few weeks.

Back to you Salt and Pepper: Please note that the info on ridding your tank of mites on the page I linked is very limited. It is actually necessary to bathe your crabs again a week later, replacing the substrate again and boiling all tank ornaments. It's a good idea to keep wood and things out during that week, use only plastic hideys (I used a plastic flower pot with a doorway cut in it, upside down for their hidey) and ornaments that are easy to clean.

When bathing your crabs to rid them of mites, make sure the water is tepid - as in lukewarm, not room temperature. Room temperature is actually rather cool and will shock the hermies. It should feel neither warm nor cold on the inside of your wrist when you put your wrist to the water.
Put them in upside down, forcing them to come out of their shell to right themselves, which forces water into the shell helping to flush it out. Have them do this twice to be sure. You have no idea if there are any mites hiding inside the shell.

Place them back into a tank with fresh, clean substrate and sterilized tank decor and extra shells. Feed carefully, removing food daily.
I think where mites are concerned, you don't want to leave food too long to encourage more mites, allowing more eggs to hatch that may have been laid in the food itself.

So to trim it down, completely change substrate, sterilize the decor and shells, wipe down the inside thoroughly with vinegar water, bathe the crabs to remove any mites that may be hiding on them or in their shells, repeat a week later. You may want to even repeat again another week later just to be sure. Be diligent about changing out food regularly.

Hope that helps! I know I'm not leaving even dried food in their for long periods any more, except food that doesn't contain grains. :)

Mites 'n Molters

Post by Salt and Pepper »

Oh great, I have mites again! A whole bunch of little white moving specks randomly just appeared in my tank all over the substrate (EE). I'm not sure if it was bothering my crabs or not- I have 4 of them not molting and they appeared huddled in a corner earlier but no mites on them, just in the moss, water dishes, and substrate. Th crabs seem to be acting normal, but pretty much hiding al ot as usual... What I'm concerned about is that Hermie just molted and left some of his claw in the substrate and I haven't seen Jake or Kawaii in a while. 2 months, or 3 weeks atleast. I figure they're molting. If not, I don't want to unbury them or disturb them anyhow. I bought some more substrate. I really wanted sand but all they had was Live CaribSea and I couldn't find Desert Sand. So I got some more EE. What should I do about my molters?

Oh and the mites look like tiny white moving dots about the size of a period. There is also a couple of small black bugs about the same size of a comma with one wing flying around everything. They look like gnats.
I love all my hermies! They are all PPs.

If they're white, you probably have booklice, not mites. Booklice eat mold and fungus that can grow in crabitats, even the best-kept ones. They live in pretty much every house, so while getting rid of them is something you may want to strive for, they're more than likely going to come back as our tanks are the perfect habitat for them.

Hmmm...yeah.. I wasn't really sure if they were mites. Will they bother my crabs though? What should I do? How can I get rid of them?

A deep clean should get rid of them this time, but if they're in your house there is a good chance they may come back. I've heard from some people not to bother about them unless they take over your entire tank, but I've also heard that they could possibly stress out the crabs.

I had mites. All I had to do was throw away all the bedding, cleaned everything in the tank (including the hermit crabs), took out everything and put the hermit crabs in an old cage (you can also use a box with a towel at the bottom, make sure there are no holes they could possibly get out of) bought new bedding, and put the bedding and stuff in and thats all. To prevent getting mites try not using plankton-like food and if you do, (do this with any hermit crab food) only feed them at night. The reason mites come is because it's moist in the cage and has food ready. Try those tips to prevent and get rid of mites. Hope it helps! :D

P.S
Do you still have mites? How are your crabs?

A deep clean and tracking is the best way to get rid of mites. To avoid giving foods that hermies do need to remain healthy is not advised to do, and hermies should have food in their tank during the day too. One can also use tape and put it along the bottom of the outside of the tank and put a line of vaseline along the tape so the mites become stuck too as opposed to getting in the tank. This should also give the crabber an idea as to which direction the mites are coming from.

mites again, again, and again!!!!!

Post by hermie_lover3542 »

This is the 3rd case in a row i get mites every month!!! It's driving me crazy!! Is there a way to stop them for good? The crabs don't seem to be bothered. And I don't no if I can clean them out in time because I go to my dads house today until thursday. Well I do have a tank down there so I guess I'm taking veryone down there today. What will happen if I just leave the tank for a couple of days, there will be no mites, and what are some ways to prevent them? Or even get rid of them?

Are you sure they're mites and not just fruit flies? If they are indeed mites, then you most likely haven't gotten rid of them out of the tank with any of your deep cleans and need to try to sterilize everything when you do a clean - boiling water in the tank, etc. to try to kill the ones that may be still living on the tank. Replace as much as you can with your clean - substrate, ornaments, etc. Bathe all crabs in salt water to try to kill the mites before putting them in the fresh tank, and ensure that the salt water gets all the way back into their shells.
