Not sure what you mean by 'closely', but there is a possibility that it can be damaging to the hermie. If one is to spray a hermie, it should be that of a fine 'mist', not a 'spary'. Remember, the hermies eyes do not have lids to close for protection, and their gills are on their sides and very sensitive.

Well I'm sure you wouldn't like to be sprayed.

To raise humidity with a misting bottle I spray the walls of the tank, the top layer of the substrate, the fake plants and the climbing objects. I try not to spray the crabs.

I just mist the air in the tank, but I don't aim at the hermit crabs themselves.

greenshellhermit reading back on this it is a little unclear as to whether you are meaning when misting the tank, or taking the hermies out of the tank for a spell for exercise. If one takes the hermies out of the tank for a spell to exercise, yes they need lightly misted to ensure their gills stay moist while they are out of the tank. I have also read where a few crabbers mist within their tanks too, and seems the hermies stretch out further for the misting. (but most mist the walls of their tanks to avoid a mold/bacteria complication, unless they use a cocofiber substrate that needs to be kept damp)

Spraying crabs is similar to bathing them, it just muddles up their 'water storage'. Spray the whole tank, not the crab if it is too dry, and if you are spraying him because he is not coming out of his shell, it is up to him when he wants to come out of his shell.

Sterwick spraying and bathing a hermie is not the same. This post was resolved in Dec. 2008.
I have sent a pm to you asking you to please visit

and pay a little more attention to #12.
Thank you!

I have read your reply. I do have the tendency to reply to old topics and say what others have said many times before.
