Post by Salt and Pepper »

I'm about to cry-I'm so worried!.I.noticed.Wasabi.was.half.buried-she.stayed.there.for.about.a.day.or.2.The.back.of.her.shell.was.sticking.out.
so.I.picked.up.her.shell.and.she.was.a.really.light.pink.with.white.on.her-but.I.thought.I.may.have.seen.it.move.
Where.she.was.there.are.what.looks.like dozens of crab.peices-I.wonder.if.she.molted.But.she.was.sleeping.on.the.heater-I.think.she.may.have.burned.herself!
Please.help!(BTW.the.substrate.is.2.inches.deep.I.think)

As I gathered the limbs, I noticed there was more than one claw- there were 2 claws- one large purple pincher and one small pincher. But I also noted she has a purple claw. So, we checked every crab and they all have small claws (with the exeption of Jake, he came small-clawless) and large purple pinchers! This was really freaky! I only have 5 other crabs excluding Wasabi.. There was also 4 red legs- and they all have all legs!! What could explain this?

(PS: 'Wasabi' is dead.)

Wasabi doesn't sound dead - those 'dozens of crab pieces' sound like her exoskeleton. If she was in the shell and was light in color, she was recently molted. You sound like you found her feeder claw and big pincher along with all of her legs. I hope you still have her as I don't think she's dead at all. I think she's tucked very far back into her shell as crabs get smaller after they've molted. "Hollow" legs, when referring to an exo, don't look hollow unless you get very close to them - if you look in the top of them, there will be a small hole that you can see in.

Make sure that you keep her separated from all the other crabs and keep her in a quiet place as lots of noise and activity (especially handling) can easily stress her to the point of death. Keep her tank at the right humidity and temperature and offer her a good nutritious diet along with her salt and fresh water and she should be back to normal in two weeks or so!

Just leave her be - when a crab is very recently molted (as she is), they won't move until their exo is hard enough to not get sand embedded in it. They're that soft when they molt. This is when she is most vulnerable, so do your best to not do anything that might frighten her.

You're still using the salt water conditioner? How much do you have left before it's empty? You really need to get rid of it because it will kill your crabs.

I do hope you gave her her old exo too, she very much needs to eat that to gain her strength back. You disturbed her in a very vulnerable state, so you will need to leave her alone as much as possible for the next week or two.
Is her old exoskeleton in the tank with her?
Glad to hear you got an iso, and I do hope you got some new salt water mix!

Salt and Pepper And also bought pre-mixed saltwater and Moss.
Wait, I just replied to a post where you asked if the Petco Glub salt for hermies was ok to buy and I did a reply to it. So let me see if I am getting this right... you bought the glub salt today as mentioned in this post, then asked if it was ok to buy? ^)
