Bathing moulters in pest invasion

Post by Wai »

Urgh, I lifted the piece of mopani wood in my tank today and saw two tiny white bugs crawling on it. I immediately moved all the hermit crabs in the main tank to the iso tank and unfortunately had to dig up post-moult Sedna, who has yet to finish hardening. I set up a barrier around Sedna in the iso and everyone else is now wondering why they were crammed into a small tank.

Before moving the hermit crabs, I gave each of them a bath, except for Sedna, because he was still soft. Does anyone here bathe a soft hermit crab?

Even though we have ponds here large enough for the hermies to completely submerge in, and we are still occasional bathers we have yet to bath a post molter who had not hardened completely.
Being your post molter was in an iso, and sectioned off from the others, and the ones from the main tank were moved over to iso if it were me I wouldn't worry too much.

I agree with Marie. I don't know a lot about mites, but many do not burrow below the surface very far, so your molter is probably safe. Sorry to hear about the mites! Hope you can get rid of them easily.

Turns out that the mites invaded the iso too, so I threw out the old bedding. I am now just using the small amount of leftover beach sand until I can find something else.

Wai, have you been able to identify the type of mites you have? You may be able to figure out the source if you can find out what they are.
I had grain mites, so now I'm very very careful with anything that could contain them, and grind up grains very small! ;)
