moulting

Post by beledi »

I have had three hermies about three weeks. I put in a salt bath last weekend and I have had one crab since dig in and have not seen him since. One of the other crabs moved to a new shell and the third appears to be investigating other shells. What should I do about the one buried? The other crabs do not seem interested in the area so I do not think they will dig him up. I have a ten gallon tank. Should I take the buried crab to an iso tank, cover with a pop bottle or leave it alone? I have no idea if it is even alive since I have not seen it. I have to admit I have been nervous about the thought of the moult for any of my crabs. Please help, as I am so confused as to how to proceed and I do not want to kill my crab. :S

Sometimes they dig all over the place until they find the perfect place to molt. Either that or he's trying to escape the temp. Check to see if your temp is too high.

Some of my crabs like to dig and when I clean the tank out I see them running around in there all alone after I've taken everything out and I'm cleaning the other hermies or their toys or bowls. I know one of the crabs I just got molted before I got him because he was all hairy and had those little pointy nails at the ends of his legs. I haven't seen him for a few days.

Yep, they like to dig. The point of molting is when they don't come up for several weeks. Then just leave them. Do NOT dig them up. That will stress them so much that they might not survive the molt.

Hermies know to stay away form molters. You should not have any worries when they do dig down except you will worry. It is just human nature to worry about your hermie.

Thank you so much. I would hate to have a hermie die through improper care. :)
