I think they are both moulting...

Post by Chermo »

I am not sure but I really think they are both down, I know where they are burried but I have no idea why they are burried. Soupy has been burried since last night (late) and Kermi burried a few hours ago. I just put all the new shells I ordered in there and just got the right salt water in there (I had the wrong salt before) and I hope they had everything they needed before they went down. I guess I will keep an eye on them both and see what happens. Wish me (and them) luck.

Ok for some strange reason I decided to go to the tank and listen and I can hear what appears to be a scratching noise under the sand, has anyone ever actually listened after their crabs were burried to see what it may sound like if they are in fact moulting? I am just wondering. I am getting worried about this, I can see part of Soupy's shell and it is not moving at all. Do they move during a moult?

Yes, they do move. They have to get their exo off, so they can eat it. Also, I'd say that they are molting. Usually that's whats going on if they completely burry themselves.

When I got home from the movies with my mom a few minutes ago, I did see Soupy's shell move a tiny bit so I know he is not dead and I can still hear Kermi moving around. They are small so I hope they are not under that long, I really want to see them again and play with them. Do they come up before or after they eat their exoskeleton?

They'll come up after they eat their exo. Both my "boys" are under at the moment as well, the tank is looking very empty :(. Just have to be patient and wait until they come up of their own accord. And yes, I hear my two scratching around unter the sand, especially since both of them buried next to the sides of the tank lol. Also, when they do come up, you should leave them alone for a few days to let them recouperate, am I right?

Yeah, you're right. 3 of mine are molting right now. Hubert and Xena have been molting for about a week now. Little Jorgie is still surface molting. Atleast he made it through the 5 hour car drive today... atleast I think he did.

I can see Kermi at the bottom of the aquarium, she burried through 3 or more inches of sand and is actually on the glass on the bottom of the tank. I can actually see her if I use a flash light. I won't be doing it anymore but I thought it was weird that I could actually see her. She still looks like she did when I brought her home she is just digging around the bottom.

i think she needs time to be in the dark for the molting hormone to be released so she can start the process.
