Compound eyes

Hermit crabs have eyes that are highly sensitive to the movement of others, such as predators. Hermit crabs seem to think that people have compound eyes too. Consequently, they stay still when their owner approaches, thinking that their owner cannot see them.

Straight antennae pair

These antennae are used for touch, similar to how humans touch objects with their fingers.

Bent antennae pair

These antennae are used for taste-testing.

Modified gills

These extract oxygen from water vapour, allowing the hermit crab to live on land, as long as the air is humid.
