Urg!
I found this site: http://www.urtrade.com/hermit/food/food.htm, it says not to EVER feed crabs meat, and says that crackers are okay with saying nothing about the salt and iodine!
it does say avoid giving them extremely salty foods....but??? some info is i guess ALL OPINION, especially this page: http://www.urtrade.com/hermit/habitat/habitat.htm
i'm not saying it's bad, just not all the correct info.

I'm pleased to hear that! You two also happen to be the top posters here (apart from me lol), seeing that you've reached the Coenobita rank.jacicauthon wrote:i love this site! everyone's so helpful and informative!
Crackers mean salt. Salt means table salt. Table salt means hermit crab killer.AllPets wrote:You can feed your hermit crab commercial hermit crab food from your pet store, but you should also supplement its diet with a variety of other foods. Here are a few guidelines:
* they like various kinds of fruits and veggies, such as pieces of lettuce, grapes, bananas, apples, etc. These should be removed the next day since they are perishable
* they also enjoy pieces of dry cereal, popcorn and crackers
* avoid giving them any extremely sugary or salty foods
* you should NEVER give them meat
You should have fresh, clean water in the cage at all times. Keep the water in a shallow dish that the hermit crabs can enter and leave easily. Avoid using dishes that have are slippery, wobbly, or too deep, and don't use metal dishes.
A land hermit crab can drown in its water dish if it cannot climb out. To avoid this problem, you can fill the dish with rocks or a piece of driftwood to help the crab climb out.
The best food and water dishes to use are probably seashells. For the water dish, you can use either one very large clam shell or several smaller shells.
You will not have to worry about the crab drowning in the water, and the shell will also be a good source of calcium to the crabs. Calcium is very important for hermit crabs. Another way you can provide calcium is by giving your crabs pieces of cuttlebone (cuttlebone can be found in pet stores; it is sold for birds).
Don't give them meat? Seriously, hermit crabs are omnivores just like people. They'll become protein deficient, and the chances are that they won't survive their next moult.
I am not a great fan of shell dishes. Basing on what they're saying, the water in the clam shell will take days to absorb any calcium. However, clam shells can get very deep in the inner area and tend to absorb the water itself. I recommend rock pool dishes instead.
