I added a saltwater pool to our 20 gal.
It is rather big, but the crabs seem to enjoy it! There is always a lot of sand and poop in it
So far I have been changing the water every 2nd day and it is a lot of work!
I have to take out the shower caddy shell shop, lots of decorations, empty the pool of rocks and siphon the water out with an aquarium vac. Takes about an hour from my day...
I looked into small water filters. And can't make up my mind between the Hagen Elite Mini and the Penn Plax Small World Filter.
I am hoping that somebody here has any experience with either of them and can tell me about some pros and cons!?!?
Thanks a lot,
Heidi

I haven't used either of those...so I won't be much help. Hope the other members can help you
I don't know if this would work for you or not, but I have one for my 2.5 gal aquarium that my betta resides in, and it works great-plus it's not very expensive, and the filters are easy to remove and reuse a few times before replacing with new ones.

I have a Smallworld filter in each of my fresh and salt water ponds. The ponds are big enough for the filters to sit flat on the bottom and I fill the area besides the filters with glass gems. I change out the water completely at least once every two months and rinse the filters with warm-hot water.
Dang Wai, I am investing in some of those! Changing water here has also been a big chore because I like to have a bigger pond for them, and I've even made the pond small because of it now.
That's a darn good idea.

Gonna take a ride to my LPS first thing Tuesday morning
I saw the Smallworld filters there. If I remember right, they are around $5 and I have some air pumps in the garage from when I used to have Bettas.

When my hermit crabs still had the small water dishes, I didn't mind changing the water at least once every two days. However, I felt that I should give them the option of fully submerging themselves if they wanted to, so I bought two big plastic salad bowls that came with a sieve in each of them to serve as footsteps. The ponds are very deep, but I haven't had any cases of drowning so far. Hermiefun gave me the idea of a filter in a tiny critter keeper and craft mesh sheets as footing, so when I saw the salad bowls in the dollar stores, I knew what to do.
