Caves?

Post by lolomo12 »

In order for the crab to multiply in captive they need salt water and fresh water right? But in a tv program I saw they are showing hermit crabs in a cave naturally living with other creatures. How do they multiply and live there? What about the substrate guano? (bat poop)

Hermit crabs spend their first life stages in water, it's true. They are, as eggs, carried around in the mother's shell. When it's time for them to hatch, she goes to the ocean and the ocean water bursts the eggs, starting crabs' lives as zoea. From there, they go through several changes, ending up as megalops, which are more like hermit crabs than the zoea, but still not able to spend all of their time on land as their gills haven't fully developed. They will take their first shell and bury themselves, molting to turn into full hermit crabs.

The crabs in the cave may live there most of the time, but a cave would not provide a varied-enough diet, nor would molting or reproduction be able to occur, at least, wouldn't be able to safely occur. These crabs most likely leave the cave to do all of these parts of daily life.

What TV program was it? I'd love to watch it.

But is this cave close to any ocean/sea water sources?
What is the name of the program you saw this on?
