Dissapearing cephalopods

Post by crypticlaman »

Normally im not even sure how well the food I give them goes over unless I stay up to see who's eating...except Poe of course because he's up when I am. Last night was different. Im pretty sure they liked it. I warmed a bit of octopus for them and placed a nice tentacle covered piece on a shell in the sand. This morning...Dun dun dun...It is gone. No trace. All three Hermies innocently buried in the sand and no obvious lumps anywhere...so where is it? I am assuming right now it is buried under one of them as they are only about half way down...Why disturb them? I will look when they decide to move. Nothing better than a full belly and a nap.

The little stinkers do like to run off and hide with their tasty morsels. As long as nobody is buried, I will dig around to find hidden food tidbits.
Octopus! I'll have to visit an Asian market and see if I can get some of that. I sure don't see it in our local grocery meat counter lol.
I did steam a clam for them last week, which they seemed to enjoy, but only after I was in bed sleeping.
A few days later I steamed them an oyster, which looked completely undisturbed for two days. So I pulled it out and decided no oysters and clams in the same week! lol.
Thankfully they didn't drag any off and bury it. They are messy eaters! :)

I haven't tried oysters or anything, but I recently tried a bay scallop for the first time...it was missing the next day, and I never found it.

I have been amazed on several occasions to see just how much these hermies here can eat at times. Certainly can tell when there is something that has been placed in the tank and they LOVE it. Little note, when feeding any types of shell fish please remember to at least steam them (due to possible shell disease)

I usually cook all their food (proteins) the same way I cook my own minus the seasonings. Boiled, steamed baked whatever. I just avoid the metal utensils and pots. It seems to go over well. I hope it is healthful too. They are getting more active as the days go by and seem stronger and brighter...digging A LOT now...all three of them. Ive been upping the shrimp just in case theres a molt coming on. Tonight is octopus again though...and blackberries

I'm happy to hear the little ones are becoming more active! It is suggested if one does cook their hermies food to use glass, or a stainless steel pot/pan.
