I bought some Instant Ocean marine aquarium Seasalt today. I bought one for a 10 Gallon aquarium. The box says to empty the whole thing in side of a 10 gallon tank. My hermies' bowl is smaller than that, and that would be far too salty. How much salt do I put in my hermie's water?
The bowl I have is: http://www.petco.com/product/14366/Zoo- ... Bowls.aspx

Re: Instant Ocean Salt Question
You need to pre-mix it in a container so it isn't just being mixed in their water bowl. Do you have an old milk jug handy, or some other large container that you can use for the water? It can even be a clean plastic water bottle. If so, try looking at the mixing instructions located here. It gives instructions for how to mix Instant Ocean for everything from 1 cup of water at a time to a gallon at a time.
I'm so glad you got a good ocean water mix! Your hermies must be very excited!

Re: Instant Ocean Salt Question
It is highly suggested to mix and let sit for 12-24 hours too. Happy to hear you got the proper ocean mix. Do not be surprised if when they are first offered the right ocean water they sort of drain the pond for the first couple of days. This in itself will show how they have been lacking it in their diet. Make sure to close the plastic bag tightly with a twisty tie to keep any moisture out of it so it doesn't harden. You can also use a regular drinking water bottle, or if you have an 24 ounce soda bottle or such with a lid for mixing mix it in there. A gallon might be overkill because ocean water can turn/sour after so long.

CSJ is being restored do to a booboo during an attempt to upgrade its software. The site is huge with info so it is taking longer than anticipated to restore the site from the database. But much of our info from there can also be found on CrabbyWiki

Re: Instant Ocean Salt Question
That was also one of the reasons why the main site section of Hermit Crab Paradise is written in raw HTML and PHP as opposed to storing it all on a database... if the database crashes, then there's a big problem.ladybug15057 wrote:CSJ is being restored do to a booboo during an attempt to upgrade its software. Re: Instant Ocean Salt Question
Instant Ocean can be mixed at 1/4 cup salt to 1/2 gallon of dechlorinated water.
Sorry, don't know the other measurements as I only mix the 1/2 gallon at a time.

Re: Instant Ocean Salt Question
I was just looking for the answer to this (and I found it without asking for a change!
) - does this vary from brand to brand? I don't think the brand I got was Instant Ocean, but can I still use the 1/4 cup to 1/2 gallon of water ratio? Er, once I work out how much a gallon is I mean

Re: Instant Ocean Salt Question
Oh, and I don't have time to let it sit. I didn't know I needed to. One crab keeps draining the bowl and the bottle I have been filling it with (in which I guesstimated the mix based on taste
) is empty. As is the bowl. Is it going to be bad if I can't let it sit this once?

Re: Instant Ocean Salt Question
I used Red Sea Salt. Rather than following the mixing instructions, I put a hydrometer (not to be confused with a hygrometer) in the water and I add salt to it until the water has roughly the same specific gravity as ocean water. Specific gravity varies with temperature. I just make sure that most of the salt has dissolved (Red Sea Salt takes a lot longer than Instant Ocean to dissolve) before pouring it into the salt water pond.
I have a Smallworld filter in each of my ponds to help keep the water fresh.
