GRRRRR *fume*

Post by emmac350 »

I came home from work to find a note on the door of my apartment saying that the maintenance guy let in exterminators to treat our apartment. They didn't tell us they might send in exterminators, nor did they let us know at least the day before so I could stop up the openings between the lid and the tank for the crabs. I can't smell anything, but Huey is fairly dependable, and doesn't leave notes that have no purpose behind them. So I know that our apartment was sprayed, the only question is did they do every room? My ISO is also sitting unused on the floor in the office - might it have been exposed? I hate this!!!!! Why can't we use natural non-crab-killing methods to get rid of bugs? Or at least use bug killers that aren't airborne so the crabs can't be exposed? I've found tons of ways to get rid of mosquitoes, roaches, flies, fruit flies, etc. that don't involve spraying anything - why can't we use those and opt out of the "spray my apartment with harsh chemicals - they'll give me cancer and kill my pets! hooray!" cycle that this stupid apartment does...

Grrrrr! >[ I'm with you Emma!
I think you should definitely call the maintenance guy and ask him what kind of treatment was done, as you have hermit crab pets and insecticide is deadly to them, so you want to know if your crabs were exposed, and would he PLEASE let you know ahead of time if there are going to be exterminators coming!
By law in most states, a landlord (or anyone) must let you know 24 hours ahead of time if they need to enter your apartment. Get yourself a copy of the Landlord/tenant act for your state. You can be nice about it, but remind them that you do need notice next time. And they should NEVER enter your apartment when you are not home without your knowledge.
I would be furious!
Good luck, I hope your crabs are okay, and find out if your iso was exposed! You have EVERY right to nicely ask, or get assertive if they are not forthcoming or helpful. You go girl!

I agree you have every right to be mad, and I would of called already demanding a few answers. Any time there are any chemicals used as well one is to remove food from the area as well. Was around your fridge done? Was it unplugged so the fan wasn't running? What about your cupboards if the food wasn't in cans or air tight jars? (cupboards are NOT air tight for such things)
And yes, notice is to be given when such exterminating is being done so one can prepare for it. Surely the land lord had more than an hours notice. Emma you and your hubby be careful yourselves!!

Urgh, that's terrible. Though I'm not surprised that they didn't take into account that some people in the apartment might have hermit crabs as pets.

I just talked to the maintenance guy, and it was him just letting us know he came in to fix our drippy bathtub faucet like we'd asked last week. He said that the apartment owner wants him to use up all of the "exterminator" slips before he buys more "Maintenance was here today" ones. Phew! I'm so relieved...

Emma I'm so glad! He should have at LEAST crossed that part out or something, for crying out loud. Can't the man use a pen! jeeZ. lol.

Bo and Mo, the law says they can't enter your home (apartment) without prior notification. So the law was broken in this instance. many tenants put up with this behavior because they are afraid of losing their home, or of being harassed in other ways by their landlord.

Technically it wasn't broken, CrabbyJo, as he was coming in as we had requested the Saturday before to repair something we'd already had him come in to look at. He just didn't inform us that he wasn't an exterminator.
