How do hermit crabs actually drink the water from the sponge? i mean they cant exactly grab water like they can food with their pinchers..this isnt a need to know thing but i was just wondering...

Sponges aren't needed. I don't use sponges. I let them drink from sitting at the legde of their 'pools' and dunking their LPs in to drink. That is for both salt and fresh.

Sponges are good to have espcially if you have a deep water dish and/or if you have small hermit crabs. It gives them something to hold on to and seconds as a climbing toy. But you don't HAVE TO have one, but really you should if you have deep bowls/small hermies.
