What a stupid bunch of hooey (seriously, sorry if I offended any of the animal rights activationists, and for want of a better word). I get so tired of all this hooey about let's save all the animals of the world. In some economies the only thing that is a main meat staple and brings in money is fishing. For some, that's their livelihood. You have to think rationally before doing silly things. Here's a good question for some of you: What if an endangered animal eats an endangered plant. What do you do then?"Legislation to protect crustaceans has been proposed but it is likely to cover only scientific research. Millions of crustacean are caught or reared in aquaculture for the food industry.
I do think it's wrong if poachers illegally go out and steal animals and hermit crabs off of public lands that they were never allowed to in the first place. That becomes a legal issue then. But catching animals to eat for food is alright.

Re: Article about hermit crabs and pain
Personally, I would not want to eat a crustacean that, just before it's death, was tortured and released stress hormones into its body, as lobsters are when they are dropped live into boiling water. Can't be good for us.
Good thing I'm allergic to shellfish.
I do believe the industries that raise shellfish could be more humane though.
My sis in law worked on a pig farm. She had to quit because of the inhumane ways the pigs were treated, especially before they went in to be slaughtered. Horrible. We eat animal flesh all the time that's been flooded with stress hormones due to the way they died.
Any wonder why we are getting so many diseases, when we ingest all this stuff?
btw, I love to eat meat, not a vegetarian, just have some thoughts about what we eat.

I can get your line of reasoning. So then we eat the animals stress hormones and we get more stress hormones ... it's gotta go someplace, though. The question is where, and what effect would that have on our bodies? This'd be worth doing a reasearch study on. Quite an interesting theory that you have, CrabbyJo! Thanks for mentioning it.

Re: Article about hermit crabs and pain
One of my friends hunts, and his wife refuses to eat any boar that he hunts (they're fairly common around here) because they're so hard to get a immediate kill on, they've almost always flooded themselves with adrenaline and it doesn't taste good.
She doesn't mind eating the deer he gets, or the turkeys, etc. but she refuses to eat any boar because you shoot them and then have to chase them through the woods for a few hours until they finally tire out and you finish it off. The entire time that's going on, the meat is getting more and more bitter and she doesn't touch it. Deer and birds are just about always a one shot deal and, therefore, no adrenaline.
