Can of mealworms

Post by erikleeson »

I got a small can of meal worms to be fed as a protein boost and a treat, I've fed them meal worms I've killed myself, and I gotta say, they really like them! I was going to get a large plastic jar but it was $16!

So I settled on this small thing

I'll let everyone know how they like it, I'm sure they will.

What would mainly concern me about this product is that it is cooked right in the can.

http://store.everythingreptileinc.com/pt1958.html

"Product Description
The Exo Terra canned foods are a convenient way to feed insects. These insects (and snails) have been cooked in the can to maintain nutritional value, flavour and aroma. It also softens the exoskeleton of the insects for easier digestion and breaks the bonds between the collagen protein to make it absorbable by reptiles. Collagen is an important fibre that aids in building bone, cartilage, skin and claw structures. The canned insects have the same nutritional value as live insects but are easier to digest."

I've bought the caterpillars and crickets in the can. Did you open it yet? If not, do it outside!! Ugh the smell is NASTY. My crabs liked them all mushy but I dried the rest.

I didn't open it yet, is there a generous portion? How many worms roughly? Are they like superworms or little mealies?

There's a lot in there. I'd say regular mealies.

I put some in the dish and they really like it! The smell wasn't so bad either, but in the morning they dried out. I saw 3 crabs eating the worms at like 11 PM! It was really cool. I put the lid back on so should I freeze them or fridge them, and how long will they last?

If you don't freeze them, they will last maybe 4-5 days then start to get all moldy.

I'm not a fan of canned anything for crabs. My crabs like the freeze-dried mealworms I get from Flukers, but they usually get them in the form of Vegetable Barley ( a Crabotanicals food variety).

But aren't crabs only allergic to rust? And if crabs go around eating dead birds along the sea line, how do they not suffer from potential diseases while meal worms that come in contact with metal ingested by the crabs could be fatal?
