I was using Calci Sand before I knew that it was potentially dangerous. I changed the substrate to Eco Earth and, almost immediately, my hermies were bustling about! They used to simply lie in their tunnel and sleep all day. Thanks for educating us!!!

I was peeking around, but could not find the post. Could you please add this to the black list for substrates? (zilla brand)

Oh my! I am a new crab owner and my initial purchase was yellow calci-sand, but I switched to coconut fiber recently just see if the crabs enjoyed that more. They really do seem to like coconut fiber better anyway. I had been wondering about the vita-sand that is offered in the reptile section as well, but it sounds like all of these fake sands are bad. How good are egg shells for calcium?

Egg shells are great sources of calcium. Vita-sand is bad.

Is ZooMed Hermit Crab SOIL OK? It was pending on the database's list...so, I was just wondering! There were pretty good deals on EBay, that's why I'm asking. It said 100% Coconut Fibre, too! But, looks are deceiving...Like hermit crab sand!

I would suggest using quickrite playsand, and Eco earth .. Mixture 5 parts sand and 1 part eco earth. But not everyone is in the US I understand that some places don't have.

Oh! Okay. There,s a place where I can get about 20 kilos of sand for about five dollars near my home, so sand isn't the problem. It's just quite hard to get EE in Australia

There are some links about the play sand (the suppose to be higher quality playsand quickrete)

Not all impurities can be washed or baked out...

Lots of reading but well worth it, loads of research went into the info too.
