Re: HELP he lost his big claw!

Post by Purple pinchers »

Well woke up today and checked on him he is still a live. He has dug about half way down and now is sitting there in his small hole. Could he be about ready to surface molt counting he has been eating some calcium sand about a week ago. And now he lost his big claw and is stting in the corner? Or is he dieing :( . I think i will go set up a iso tank today and put him in it. And will a plastic butter container work for a hide out? :o

Well i have him in a iso tank with salt water, water, and some chicken and carrots. I setted him at the entrence of the plastic hide out and now i think he crawled back and buryed himself :| . So i think he might be molting. Only thing is not sure if he stored up on water and food very good D: .

Here is a pic of the Iso tank.

Purplepincers,

It's hard to know why he may be losing limbs. A crab does not lose limbs when he is getting ready to molt. Have you been handling the crabs much? I know they are pretty new to you. I would try not to disturb him any more than you have to at this time. It's very late here right now and I'm a bit tired to go looking to see what your tank set up is. If you can find the thread with that in it, could you post a link to it in this thread? That would help a lot.
Since these crabs are very new and came from a bad pet store, they have a few strikes against them and should be handled not at all for the first few weeks. You should get their home set up and try to leave them alone as much as possible so they can adjust and relax. Dropping claws is most often a sign of stress, which can be due to many factors, including the whole ordeal of being harvested, stored, shipped, and kept in a bad pet store on top of it. It can be a sign of illness as well.
Just make sure you've offered all they need, that their home is as safe as can be for them, and leave them to adjust. Wishing you luck with him.
Fingers crossed.

Well here is the tank set up Link viewtopic.php?f=55&t=4378&sid=0ee0e14af ... 109916a5e3

Well he kinda did not look that stressed a few time he would just sit in the corner and twiddle his legs. But now in the iso tank he completely buryed himself. So i geuss i will just have to wait and see if i start smelling a fishy smell. :(

And on the picking up thing i only picked him up a couple of times. And they were just little lifts to pick him up when he fell off the corner net.

Well i am going to go check the iso tank and see if he came out for anyfood or water. :(

I have merged your post with your tank conditions post. (it does make it easier for us to follow events when posts are kept together)
Sadly, what you are now seeing maybe in the posts/replies above. Sometimes it takes a little while for the effects to be seen.

I wounder whats rong with him X(.
If he does pass away would it be a good idea to get a friend for the other one?

I also got a question about the one in the main tank. He keeps takeing all of his food in his hide out. So how should i clean it with out desturbing him?

I would recommend not getting the other hermie a friend until you are able to provide the suggestions made on page one that are to the questions you answered about your crabbing tank & methods. You should also iso a newbie, so it would help if you had a larger tank too and your current 5 gal used as an iso.
He might be taking the food in the hut for some coverage. Hermies do not usually like to be in the wide open. (especially at first) So coverage with vines and such help with this.

Well bought somethings today getting ready to set up my 10gal, counting school is almost out.

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/p ... atid=15454 Thought if it does not work for hermit crabs i can always use it on my other lizards.

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/p ... atid=19648 Bought it because it was only $1 and it looks like a good treat.

So what do you think is the food and sand good or bad for hermit crabs :o

The reptile sand should not be used. Due to how reptiles can become impacted from eating their substrate it is more of a powder in consistency and can clog the hermies gills.
The Hermit Crab bites are $1.99 on my screen? And to order just that the total charge is
*Current Order Total: $7.98
which means it is $5.99 to ship it? For that amount I could buy quite a few pieces of other fresh foods (along with a couple pieces of shrimp and fresh fish) for them at that price and offer a much wider variety. Being it needs to be refrigerated after opening, chances are it will expire before the hermies get to eat it all.
